Erg Chebbi is a large erg which is located within an area of semi-arid Pre-Saharan Steppes and not part of the Sahara Desert, and it can be found in the southeastern part of the Kingdom of Morocco. The erg represents a broad, flat area of desert covered with wind-swept sand with little or no vegetative cover, and there are several ergs that can be seen in Morocco.
Erg Chebbi in particular stretches north to south some 28 km (17 mi) over the impressive Moroccan landscape, and at some points, the dunes are an astounding 160 meters high.
The colors are quite impressive simply because with the shifting of the sun throughout the day, they are changing colors and with the shading they start with orange, pink and at the end of the day, they would have a distinguishable purple color.
There is a small legend that the locals are telling and tells the story of how a local wealthy couple turned away a tired traveller who wanted to get some rest, so for God to punish them, He dropped tons and tons of sand over their house.
Still, whether the legend is true or it is simply a story is not confirmed, however, it is something interesting to be heard from the alluring kingdom in the northern part of Africa.
Still, as the winds are changing, the erg is changing too, where spectacular dunes are created and they represent a moving art which if not taken a photo of, it will be a missed opportunity to show the world how amazing this place is.
As there are plenty of towns that surround Erg Chebbi, Merzouga is considered to be the main local tourist center, and even though there are many places where the visitors would be able to stay and discover the mesmerizing erg, it is worth mentioning that the local Berbers are the one that will help out the visitors to experience Erg Chebbi the best possible way.
All in all, not so known natural feature of Morocco, Erg Chebbi will be more popular among Morocco’s visitors who would like to see the different, wild side of the inner part of the nation, and be able to tell the interesting adventure that everyone is certain to experience here.
